In the novels of Senegalese author Ken Bugul, womens presence is a constant. However, what stands out are the authors own experiences and obsessions. Among them, the conflictive relation with her mother, originated from their separation at a very young age, is a recurrent one. Thus, love and admiration, need and desire alternate with reproaches, questions, pain, longing. Bugul’s narrative deals, above all, with a woman in constant search of herself, beyond any stereotypes or conventions. For the present work, based on the novel De lautre côté du regard (2003), the authors own declarations will be considered, together with the autobiographical trilogy with which she began her literary career and the complement of studies of existential psychotherapy.
